Staff report

The Jonathan Alder baseball and softball teams managed to get in their games this weekend despite the rain.

The Pioneer baseball team stayed unbeaten with a doubleheader sweep of host Fredericktown.

The Freddies entered play 19-2.

Alder won game one, 21-4, and then the nightcap, 14-6.

“Fredericktown is a good ballclub,” Pioneers coach Craig Kyle said. “They entered the day at 19-2.

“We just continue to swing the bats well. We had 27 hits on the day and three home runs.”

Jacob Mahon, Nate Squires and Graham Johnston all homered for the Pioneers.

Miller started game one and earned the victory. Adam Collier started and won game two.

“We played good defense, ran the bases well and did all of the little things we needed to do to win,” Kyle said.

NEWARK — The Pioneer Express rolls on.

Now a perfect 22-0, Jonathan Alder’s team pasted Newark Catholic, 14-0.

The six-inning affair saw Jacob Mahon go the distance, allowing three hits and striking out three. The Pioneer offense smote four homrs, three-run shots from Sean Flemming and Tyler Miller, and two-run blasts from Graham Johnston and Nick Squires.

“We did what we had to do, we pounded out 13 hits and Mahon pitched very well,” said coach Craig Kyle. “Now we just need to keep it up and get ready for the tournament.”

Marion Harding 1, 5 innings

MARION — What more can be said about the Jonathan Alder baseball team’s 21-0 start this season?

Wednesday night, Graham Johnston and Nick Squires limited host Marion Harding to two hits as the Pioneers run-ruled another opponent.

Squires also hit a two-run home run. Zach Maynard clubbed a three-run home run. The Pioneers had 15 hits.

“We kept hitting the ball like we have been lately,” Alder coach Craig Kyle said.

SPARTA — Enough already, Tyler Miller.

The Jonathan Alder senior threw his second no-hitter in five games as the Pioneers moved to 20-0 with a five-inning 14-0 victory over host Sparta Highland on Tuesday.

In his last five games, Miller has won all five, while giving up just five hits.

“He’s getting stronger every time he pitches,” said Alder coach Craig Kyle, whose squad was ranked second in the state’s most recent Division II poll. “He’s hitting his spots and he’s being more of a pitcher, not just a thrower.

“That’s what we need him to do if we are going advance far in the tournament.”

Miller also was standout at the plate, knocking three doubles and collecting two RBI. Graham Johnston had a home run and two more hits to drive in two; and Nate Squires collected three hits and drove in three.
