You need to know about this

Pastor Thad Gifford - Contributing Columnist

If you have read this column for any amount of time, you know that I usually take every day occurrences and turn them into “Something To Think About.” I have done that for about two years now.

Well, this week, I just want to shoot straight with you and share something that you need to know. And not only do you need to know about this, you might need to do something about it.

The Bible tells us there will be a group of people who will stand before Jesus one day, fully expecting to spend their eternity in Heaven. But the words they will hear from Him are these words: “Depart from me, you workers of iniquity, I never knew you.” (Matthew 7:23)

Now, there has to be a reason that they expected to spend their eternity in Heaven and there has to be a reason Jesus will not let them into His Heaven. In fact, He tells them that He never knew them.

Why? Did you ever think about that question? Why was it that Jesus did not know them? They explain they were good people and that they went to church and that they did many wonderful things in Jesus name, even casting out demons in His name. And still, Jesus tells them, “I never knew you.”

So, my question to you this week is simply this: Do you want to know the truth as to why these people will not be spending their eternity in Heaven when they fully expected that they would? And if I give you the truth, from God’s Word, will you do something about it before you hear those words for yourself? I certainly hope you will give the following sentences your most serious consideration.

First of all, God tells us that we are all sinners. (Romans 3:23) And that we need to be saved from our sins because sin will bring forth a physical and a spiritual death. (Romans 6:23) But God loved us so much that He allowed His Son to die in our place. (Romans 5:8) So that if we accept Jesus as our Savior and turn from our sinful life and start living for God we will spend out eternity in Heaven with Him. (Romans 10:9-13)

What does that mean? Simply put, it means anything we attempt to do to “work our way into Heaven” or to “be good enough to get into Heaven” is not going to work. And if there was one thing I would want to be sure about, it would be, “Where am I going to spend my eternity?”

So here’s the truth and you can accept it or not — the choice is yours. If you are going to a church that teaches: being baptized to go to Heaven, or doing good works to go to Heaven, or being a confirmed member of the church to go to Heaven, or giving money to the church to go to Heaven, or treating others nice to go to Heaven, or being a good person to go to Heaven … you will hear those same exact words one of these days. Jesus will say to you, “Depart from me into everlasting condemnation.” And you will spend your eternity in hell. Is that really what you want?

It amazes me that people can say they believe in God, and seldom darken the door of the church and expect to spend their eternity in Heaven with God. Listen, if you don’t care to spend your time with Him now, why would you think He wants to spend His time with you for all eternity? That’s just plain foolishness!

The Bible tells us to “Seek God first and everything else will fall into place.”(Matthew 6:33) But we are also told if God isn’t first in our lives, then we are living for the world and the Truth of God is not in us. In other words, we have been deceived.

And there are numerous people going to church on Sunday morning being led by a pastor who is also deceived and he/she is leading you right into the pit of hell. The Bible also says that each one of us are without excuse (Romans 1:20) so blaming your spiritual leader for leading you astray will not be a good enough excuse in that day. You have the ability to read the Bible for yourself. You have the ability to understand what God is telling you and you have the choice to do something about it. Your choice is to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, turn your life over to God and begin living for Him, or keep on saying you “believe” in God and you are “hoping” to spend your eternity in Heaven.

You can “know” where you are going to spend your eternity according to I John 5:13. Read it in your Bible and stop being led by your nose into spiritual untruths. Stand on your own two feet, look into God’s Word and believe what God says is necessary for eternal life. Do not be fooled any longer and then you will not have to hear those dreadful words, “Depart from Me, I never knew you.”

And that is Something to Think About for this week.
