No 35 limit in near future for U.S. 42

The section of U.S. Route 42, just south of the Lovejoy’s Plaza, won’t be dropping to a 35 mph speed limit any time soon.

After city officials met with ODOT late last year to discuss speed limit options, village solicitor Eamon Costello researched the rezoning of the area in question.

Costello presented his findings Monday, Jan. 28 to Plain City Village Council.

ODOT had explained that the village could drop the speed limit to 35 mph if the area in question was zoned a business district.

Costello’s findings on Ohio’s definition of what constitutes a business district revealed that the area in question does not meet the citeria.

“Fifty percent of all frontages have to be occupied as businesses in use,” Costello said. “I don’t see that area as a business district at this time.”

Council member Doug Saxour thanked Costello for looking into the matter and answering his questions.

Village council has had two readings of a resolution to change the speed limit to this section of U.S. 42 from 50 to 45. The third and final reading is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 11.
